OUTSIDE EDGE
A comedy by Richard Harris
Picture a perfect summer's day, a cricket green and pavilion, a match about to begin and a splendid tea on the agenda...but stormy weather is forecast for the team, their wives and partners in this hilarious comedy by Richard Harris. Can Captain Roger Dervish keep everyone together and lead them to triumph both on and off the pitch, or will he be out for a duck?
There’s Bob who’s supposed to be playing but may now instead need to visit his first wife whilst carefully avoiding his second wife! Kevin with a blister on his spinning finger and a wife more interested in bricklaying than watching cricket. Dennis who is more focussed on the ladies present than the game itself, and Alex who is just there for himself but brings his current girlfriend along simply to watch and admire him. So, Roger must do all he can to keep his team on track, whilst ably assisted by his wife Miriam and her exceptional cricket teas!
Outside Edge has remained a hit since it was first performed in 1979 with both a film adaptation and three TV series based on the play starring Robert Daws, Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall and Josie Lawrence. Penned by Richard Harris, the author of Stepping Out, the original Outside Edge series led to the playwright receiving the 1994 prize for best sitcom from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain.
Whether you love or loathe cricket, Outside Edge remains a brilliantly funny comedy not to be missed.
